One of my favorite horror novels, always leaves me feeling vaguely hungry (Dr. Lecter may be a man of unorthodox tastes, but I would still eat a meal he cooked if I was sure where the meat came from). Someone once suggested thinking of the story as an absurdist black comedy; in that line of thinking, it's a surreal, horrific cabinet of curiosities.
