Maya and her family are the only Muslims in their small Illinois town. When a terrorist attack occurs in a nearby city, the initial suspect is a Muslim man with the same last name as Maya. She and her family soon become victims of hate crime. At the same time, Maya struggles to tell her parents that she wishes to attend film school in New York against their wishes and that the boy she's really in love with isn't the perfectly suitable Muslim boy her parents have chosen. Overall I enjoyed this book but at times it felt like two separate stories. I would have liked to see less focus on the romance and more on the racism Maya and her family faced and how it affected their already fragile family dynamic.
