This is a true adventure story of a young man who fractured three vertebra while serving with the British Army and went on to climb Everest 2 years later. The story deals with the huge amount of preparation, courage, conditioning and determination of this young man. It also delves into the huge logistics involving thin air, avalanches and extreme cold. He says "I've never felt on one hand so prepared, and on the other so unprepared" and "disaster is never far away when man assumes to have control over anything." Bear Grylss faced his fears and his doubts and an almost fatal fall. His honesty comes through when he states "the mountain decides whether you can climb or not" and when near the top wonders if he will make it or die. His query to himself 'did I conquer Everest' has a very good answer. You need to read this book to get his interesting and somewhat philosophical answer. Overall an easy read, an engaging story and often a page turner.
