The Long Haul can be imagined as a fulcrum between good filmmaking and bad filmmaking. The film is a sequel to the film 'Diary of A Wimpy Kid' that released in 2010, and that itself wasn't a great film, to begin with. However, the trace amounts of novelty and charm found in that film are missing here entirely. The writers make changes to the core idea found in the source material, and you can sense why these changes were made - to translate it into the cinematic medium. However, these changes aren't very satisfying and come off as insipid. The filmmaking never stands out - the cinematography and background score are juvenile, and the editing needed to be crisper (though the shorter runtime is certainly a plus). The failure of this movie was attributed to the casting and watching these new actors on screen isn't the most ideal thing for a viewer. The performances aren't bad, but it's hard to re-imagine this new cast in the place of the older cast (the Rodrick character is a major disappointment). However, the humour is certainly an improvement over the previous films, and it's to the film's credit that it never over-indulges in teen cliches. Perhaps more of these could've made for a more enjoyable film. (2.5/5) @SSGDP of the Hamilton Public Library's Teen Review Board Diary of a Wimpy Kid “The Long Haul” was honestly one of the worst children’s films I have ever seen. This movie came out in 2017, and it was very disappointing. For example, I actually watched this movie on a flight, and I could barely get through it. The other Diary of a Wimpy Kid films were much better. For example, in The Long Haul, Greg Heffley was obsessed with going to a video game convention. I honestly did not like the modern twist to the classic movies, because they really focused on how obsessed children are with videogames, rather than other things like friendships and family. I would not recommend this movie for that reason in particular. Rating: 2/5 @Montgomery of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library The Heffley family plan to take a road trip to attend Meemaw’s 90th birthday and to spend some quality time together as a family. This movie is based on the book but incorporates some parts of the other books in the series. Compared to the previous movies, this one is pretty disappointing. Personally, I miss the old cast because the new cast members cannot act. Rodrick pretty much carried the movie with his accidental humour. However, if you are a fan of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, you will most likely enjoy the movie despite its flaws. I recommend this movie to a younger audience as they will not focus on the acting or characters too much. @xxchanel of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
