One of my absolute favourite books growing up (my first email handle was even "firewing_rox", in reference to the third book in the series, lol). One of the aspects I loved the most about it was how the author takes into account what bat sight is like and cleverly incorporates echolocation into how the characters interact with the world around them, giving the story a feeling of authenticity. The story is fast-paced but not rushed, with well-developed characters. The information about bats in the story is also accurate, and it's clear the author did his homework about bats before writing the book. Spoiler alert: Be aware that there are a couple scenes that may be frightening to younger children in regards to a character who is from a species of bat that eats smaller bats. There are no graphic depictions from what I remember, but it is made very clear that it is something the character does.
