Tons of fun as always. CC is always reliable for a good time infused with all the nostalgia of her earlier series.

Magnus, Alec, and Max are living happily in their NYC loft when one day, trouble finds them in the form of the greatest of the Greater Demons, an old foe, and an even older friend. They travel to Shanghai alongside Clary, Jace, Izzy, and Simon to face the demon and win back Magnus's soul, but find trouble lurking around every corner along the way.

I've read a few reviews talking about how this one feels more immature than her other series, and I do agree with that. It's like CC is hearkening back to the TMI days, and in doing so, her writing becomes a little less...nuanced. But I do think that this is balanced by the humour and lightness of this series, versus the heaviness and angst of others. To me, the point of TEC is nostalgia; we want to visit with our old friends, and nothing is ever too heavy while we do so. I know I'm not signing up for more heart-wrenching like I am with The Last Hours, and I'm okay with that.

For me, this was just a fun ride. The new location of Shanghai and the Institute there was interesting and colourful, and the demon realm this time was a lot of fun. Sammael as a villain was hilarious, and again, the lightheartedness of this series really shines through when it comes to the core struggle of Shadowhunters versus demons. I have this image of him in my head with his feather in his hat singing a jaunty tune and I just found him very entertaining.

I'm just happy that we have more content featuring our original Shadowhunters. I really enjoy every book of CC's that I pick up, and this was no exception. It wasn't her most exciting, her most intense, or even her most well-written, but it made me giggle, and I like a light fantasy like this every once in a while to break up all the angst.
