This book was disappointing. Normally I adore Maya Rodale's books and her way with self rescuing ladies, but this book was not at the same caliber as her other Gilded Age Girls Club series. Her attention to the time period is lovely, but these characters seem flat with no explanation or connection of the personal drive they both have to run department stores. Details were missing in their character arcs and chemistry. As a reader, I was not as invested in their story as her other characters.

Rodale takes all sorts of tropes -- lost first loves, misunderstandings, competition among lovers -- and puts them in this perfect book with lots of passion, including, most importantly, in the intellectual and emotional relationship of our main characters. An excellent read.
