The disappearance forty years ago of Harriet Vanger, a young scion of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden, gnaws at her octogenarian uncle, Henrik Vanger. He is determined to know the truth about what he believes was her murder. He hires crusading journalist Mikael Blomkvist, recently at the wrong end of a libel case, to get to the bottom of Harriet's disappearance. Lisbeth Salander, a twenty-four-year-old, pierced, tattooed genius hacker, possessed of the hard-earned wisdom of someone twice her age--and a terrifying capacity for ruthlessness--assists Blomkvist with the investigation. This unlikely team discovers a vein of nearly unfathomable iniquity running through the Vanger family, an astonishing corruption at the highest echelon of Swedish industrialism--and a surprising connection between themselves.--From publisher description.

Some published reviews have said that this book is “ingeniously plotted” and “full of sub-plots”, which would be true only for those who normally read American pulp fiction of the kind found in airport book stores; the book is fast-paced but rather pedestrian overall for anyone who’s used to reading European books about crime; I’ve even read comments by readers who thought that there were too many subplots whereas I’d say that the book is altogether much too straightforward and has no real subplots; those facets that some might think of as subplots are all dealt with in a straight-line fashion as the basic story unfolds

One of the most captivating books I have come across in a long time.

The protagonist is very special, I watched the European movie, and was very impressed. Then I listened to this,

The reader does a perfect job. The story is fantastic, the characters are riveting, the plot is again, world class.

Don't miss this one.
It leaves the other (mostly American) writers in this genre in the dust.

I am sure when they make the American version of the movie, it will be diluted to pap. AHHH Hollywood.
