Li-yan and her family align their lives around the seasons and the farming of tea. There is ritual and routine, and it has been ever thus for generations. Then one day a jeep appears at the village gate, the first automobile any of them have seen, and a stranger arrives. Li-yan, one of the few educated girls on her mountain, translates for the stranger and is among the first to reject the rules that have shaped her existence. When she has a baby outside of wedlock, rather than stand by tradition, she wraps her daughter in a blanket, with a tea cake hidden in her swaddling, and abandons her in the nearest city.

Excellent story. I used the audio book and was glad I did for the pronunciations alone. This story was heartwrenching at times but so enjoyable. Strongly recommend this one 😊

Lisa See's latest novel tells the story of Li-Yan, a hill tribe girl from Yunnan Province, who leaves her village for "outside" and becomes a tea business owner in both China and California. Along the way, the reader learns a lot about China's transition from 1970's Mao Communist state to today's entrepreneurial spirit of "make everyone rich". See also explores the growth of the tea industry, especially the sought after pu'er, and the phenomenon of Chinese girls being adopted abroad. It's all told from multiple perspectives which adds depth to the story. Like other See novels, this one ends on a cliffhanger which calls for a sequel. How does Haley reconcile her Akha heritage with her privileged American upbringing? How does her birth family protect and preserve the hidden grove with its mother tree and camphor bushes? Does Haley make a relationship work with her birth family and her adoptive family? Does Haley marry the son of her birth mother's greatest enemy?
