Even though this book is very simple (few words and lots of illustrations), it still begs for an adult to read it to their child to help explain what all of the dishes are and to provide cultural context. Being an American who only eats American-Chinese food occasionally, I was a bit confused and unfamiliar with some of the dishes myself.
Sorry to be a kill joy but. . .While I appreciate the effort to introduce dim sum to children, this book fails a reality check. Using this book as a guide, children would never be able to recognize most of the dishes in a dim sum restaurant. The illustrated carts for some of the dishes are flatly wrong. Fried food does not come from a steam cart, turnip cake typically comes from a hot griddle cart ( the older sister reaching for it would have been burnt ) and the sweet tofu that the younger sister likes usually comes from steamer, similar to a rice cooker. (Again with the safety issue!)
I adore this book and so does my daughter. The illustrations are simple, clean, and adorable. The food looks cute and yummy. And for a dim sum lover who lives in the midwest and encounters very few mobile dim sum carts these days... well, it brings great images and memories to mind. Plus my young daughter loves getting to read a book about food and smells.
