A creative, silly, and yet touching tale, The Trumpet of the Swan told by E. B. White is one of my favorite novels. The story concerns a trumpeter swan named Louis, born with a condition that prevents him from making a honking sound. Louis suffers greatly due to his speech defect, until he acquires a brass trumpet, which allows him to communicate with other swans and even people. Eventually, he gains enough courage to woo the swan of his dreams with gentle songs from his trumpet. To find out whether he succeeds, read the book! When I first read this novel, I enjoyed the character development, as many supportive characters assist and guide Louis in his journey to gain a voice. Now, as I leaf through the book’s pages, I’m noticing that the soft illustrations are a perfect complement to the author’s writing, which definitely improves the book as a whole. As a tip for those who have decided to read this book, you can easily find the songs that Louis plays online, and listening to these songs will improve your reading experience.

This was a very good book. It was interesting how Louis could do some things humans could do. The plot was good, and the characters were well built. I recommend this book to all ages.

This book is very amusing as a swan somehow plays a trumpet. You will soon be hooked by the book after reading the first chapter.

We just finished reading this book aloud with our kids (ages 6 & 9). The whole family loved it! Beautiful descriptions of wildlife, and a fun story. Every bit as enjoyable as Charlotte's Web.

EB White's love for birds and lakes and wildlife shines through in this lovely book. It is every bit as wonderful as Charlotte's Web. Would make a delightful read aloud for elementary students.
