When an intricate old map is found stuffed into the walls of the bistro in Three Pines, it at first seems no more than a curiosity. But the closer the villagers look, the stranger it becomes. Given to Armand Gamache as a gift the first day of his new job, the map eventually leads him to shattering secrets. To an old friend and older adversary. It leads the former Chief of Homicide for the Surete du Quebec to places even he is afraid to go. But must. And there he finds four young cadets in the Surete Academy, and a dead professor. And, with the body, a copy of the old, odd map. Everywhere Gamache turns, he sees Amelia Choquet, one of the cadets. Tattooed and pierced. Guarded and angry. Amelia is more likely to be found on the other side of a police line-up. And yet she is in the academy. A protege of the murdered professor. The focus of the investigation soon turns to Gamache himself and his mysterious relationship with Amelia, and his possible involvement in the crime. The frantic search for answers takes the investigators back to Three Pines and a stained glass window with its own horrific secrets. For both Amelia Choquet and Armand Gamache, the time has come for a great reckoning.

I listen to audiobooks on my commute. when reading (hate the term absorbing for audiobooks) louise penny, I like to also read along so I can see how some of the French words are written. with 'a great reckoning' I got caught up in the story, read past where the audiobook left off, then was up until 2:30 a.m. because I couldn't bear to stop.
were the events that took place in 'a great reckoning ' planned earlier in the series? what amazing storytelling. I hope at least one of the characters returns, looking at you 'goth girl.'

Since this focuses on Three Pines and The Surete Academy, and bounces back and forth between the settings, it was a little frustrating to wait for the story to continue in one place or the other. But revisiting characters in Three Pines was rewarding, and hopefully some of the new characters will show up in future books. The mystery about the map was interesting, although not integral to the murder plot. There were a few too many outlandish coincidences that moved the action along in the right direction; but, as ever, the writing is good enough to overlook the faults.

Back at Three Pines to run the Academy that trains detectives, Inspector Gamache probes past scandals and finds himself a suspect in the murder he is using to teach. I love the mysterious map you can’t stop puzzling about and the way it becomes, like Gamache’s moralizing, a deep connection to place and fate. Too bad it takes some opening trusses before you get to midpoint when you can’t put the book down.

Although the Gamache mysteries and characters are never really believable, this is one of the better ones. It deals with multiple “reckonings”, past and present, of the personal and professional kind. The precious villagers continue to expose more character flaws and determining the identity of the murder kept me guessing until the end. In addition, the reason for Three Pines not showing up on any maps is revealed. Google: Get your street view car out there!

This time, the curious Ms. Penny chooses maps as the focus of her considerable research skills. I love that there’s no telling what you’ll learn in real life when you pick up one of her books. Mr. Gamache tries to win back the once-proud and -honorable Surete office that has now been corrupted. The evil forces are powerful and seductive, much more so than the wise, thoughtful methods of Gamache and his inner circle. Good triumphs, at least for now.

A good mix of reality and fiction in the form of mystery.

Love this whole series, I wish there really was a Village of Three Pines, I would love to live there! Wonderful neighbors, great food and a murder mystery once a year!

About Policy academy and corruption. Com Gamash returns to filter out those who have caused it's decline after his seeming retirement. Good read and holds attention well. Like comfort food once you are into this series :)
