Thomas Hoving is far too full of himself, and his editor was occasionally asleep at the grammatical wheel here, but he spins a good yarn. There are several terrific stories here, and Hoving is quite entertaining when describing the wiles of 19th C fakers of medieval reliquaries, Renaissance busts or classical statuary. He also makes a good case for why forgery matters - why it is pernicious. But occasionally he seems involved in airing private vendettas, and I found those sections less satisfactory.
