In Philip K. Dick's alternate history classic, the United States lost World War II and was subsequently invaded. Now in 1962, the Germans control the eastern half of the continent, the Japanese control the west, and the two are subtly preparing for war against each other. What constitutes a moral life in this oddly fascist Middle America?

This is an interesting book with a fascinating premise. I recommend it to anyone interested in history or how history could have been. If a substantial criticism can be leveled against the story, I think it would be that it is far too short. It amounts to a short story when it should, to my mind, be Dostoyevskian in scope. Oh, well. The narration by Jeff Cummings is mostly quite good. Some of his accents are not entirely consistent throughout, and sometimes it is difficult to tell if he is going for Japanese or German. Other times they seem spot-on. A Jewish character’s Hebrew accent is very out of place in a world where Jewishness is severely ostracized. Cummings also doesn’t pause long enough between subsections of each chapter, and thereby doesn’t give the listener sufficient time to move onto a new part of the story. That said, I still recommend the audiobook.

I had never seen the series nor read the book but was fascinated to see what this alternative WWll reality would be. Just the very concept of writing a book with an alternative....was worth reading. I actually enjoyed the philosophical thoughts of each character much more than I enjoyed the alternative history.
All and all...I was a bit disappointed with this book but on the other hand....I do think it is worth a read or a listen to...just to mix one's mind up..and stretch it ..."outside the box" of history....and to dip into philosphical viewpoints.

Listened to this Philip K. Dick book after watching the first season of the Amazon series that was getting so much buzz. The overall setting is the same, but the novel and the series diverge quite a bit, one seeming like an alternate history of the other alternate history. I confess I prefer the cinematic version adapted for the screen and the liberties taken for that version, but there's much to admire in the book, which lays the foundation for some thought-provoking story lines.
