* I was under the mistaken impression that boggarts are something that J. K. Rowling invented. But now, thanks to this book, I know that boggarts are actually a thing. Well, not a real thing, of course. But a thing from Celtic folklore. :)

* As usual, Susan Cooper's writing is luscious.

* Though he gets into a lot of trouble, the boggart in this book is not malevolent. He's just mischievous like a puppy. And he's even kind of cute: he likes ice cream and pizza, and he wants to make friends.

Having loved Susan Cooper’s Dark Is Rising Sequence, I decided to give her other works a try and came across the Boggart. This was a fun book even to read as an adult. Cooper expertly blends fantasy and magic with real life in a way that both kids and adults will enjoy. There are lots of delightful characters to get to know and the Boggart itself is a great character with a long, interesting history. Following the Boggart as it discovers the modern world makes for hilarious and sometimes disastrous results. The story does date itself with the computer technology that probably most kids nowadays would not recognize, but any story that incorporates technology runs that risk. There is some talk about psychology and exorcism that may be beyond younger kids’ understanding and there are a few scenes which younger kids may find frightening. All in all, though, a great read for the whole family.
