"With shades of The Hunger Games, Ender's Game, and Game of Thrones, debut author Pierce Brown's genre-defying epic Red Rising hit the ground running and wasted no time becoming a sensation. Golden Son continues the stunning saga of Darrow, a rebel forged by tragedy, battling to lead his oppressed people to freedom from the overlords of a brutal elitist future built on lies. Now fully embedded among the Gold ruling class, Darrow continues his work to bring down Society from within. A life-or-death tale of vengeance with an unforgettable hero at its heart, Golden Son guarantees Pierce Brown's continuing status as one of fiction's most exciting new voices."-- Provided by publisher.

Continues to be well written and gripping.

So much better! What a fantastic sequel! I loved exploring more of the universe and seeing how things work a bit more. In a story like this world building is so important and Pierce Brown did not disappoint.

I’m an outlier I guess, but I just could not finish this book. I read the first one and liked it well enough and this one started off strong, but it didn’t stay that way. Darrow has a way of completely winging everything and it always works out for him, no matter the situation. Also, there are a lot of different weapons and technical terms/language used along with sub-colours to the original colour caste system and even further different political groups within them and I found I spent almost as much time looking them up in a Red Rising Wiki page as I did reading the actual story as these things are not explained very well. Overall I just found it getting repetitive and tedious and at around the 40% mark decided to put it down.

Book 2 of the Red Rising series. It's listed as a trilogy here but there are at least 4 books so far. This is the continuation of Darrow who is a Red and he has infiltrated the golds, the highest of society to help bring them down. This is all about a rebellion. Very good. Good as an audiobook too.

I read this book to fulfil the goal read a past goodreads choice awards winner (the first book in the series also won an award) i didn't think i liked the series after reading the first book and the first part of this one, and was annoyed that i had chose to read all of them this year, but by middle of this book. it got really good. i had tears in my eyes as i finished, and i can't wait to read the next one. (warning: contains a bit of strong lauguage)

This was a strong follow-up to "Red Rising," that moves beyond the elements that drew inevitable comparisons to "Ender's Game" and "The Hunger Games" in the first book. There is a good deal more violence in this series than I usually enjoy, but I am drawn by the depth and complexity of the characters, the strength of the continued worldbuilding, and the lovely twists and turns of a plot rife with political intrigue, friendships and alliances made and broken, and secrets worth dying--and living--for in this grim imagining of our future. We often joke of the "second book" trap, in which the second book of a trilogy serves as little more than a bridge to the trilogy's conclusion, neither forwarding the plot nor developing the characters in meaningful ways--"Golden Son" escapes this trap entirely (perhaps through use of its Grav Boots?) and becomes one of the strongest "second books" I have ever read.

Excellent sequel to Red Rising. I look forward to Morning Star.

A solid follow-up to to Red Rising. The second chapter of the series expands the cast and the overall character interaction. There's more action, betrayal and revelation than the first book. Darrow is finally past the introduction phase of his mission, and he can now work to truly infiltrate The Society. Along the way he makes new friends, loses old friends to betrayal and makes sacrifices to move his mission forward. You also learn more about the origins of The Society, and why it has lasted almost a millennia. Everything I enjoyed about the first book was kicked up a few notches in the second.

This is the follow-up book to the hugely entertaining Red Rising. Just like its predecessor, this book delivers fast paced thrills, but adds 100% more giant space battles. I'm a great fan of the tense romance developing between Mustang and Darrow and am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

"The human spirit tries to break free, again and again, not in hate like the Dark Revolt. But for love. They don't mimic each other. They aren't inspired by others who come before them. Each is willing to take the leap, thinking they are the first. That's bravery. And that means it's a part of who we are as a people."

"I will die. You will die. We will all die and the universe will carry on without care. All that we have is that shout into the wind--how we live. How we go. And how we stand before we fall."
