Throughout the 50s and the 60s, England's Hammer studios updated classic horror and mystery films (Frankenstein, Dracula, Sherlock Holmes) with a successful mix of blood and bosoms. Somewhat similar to Roger Corman's Poe films, Hammer films were both pulpy and stylish, shot quickly and cheaply. With a new "Mummy" film in the theater (This one has a lady mummy!), I picked up this 1959 version starring Christopher Lee in the lead and Peter Cushing as the archaeologist who has to stop him. A contemporary viewer will be struck by the fake, theatrical sets and the low budget effects, but that's part of its charm. It's a loose remake of the 1930s Karloff version. Lee and Cushing were frequent co-stars in other Hammer films. Directed by Terence Fisher, who also did "Horror of Dracula" and "Curse of Frankenstein."

"The Mummy",1959, stars Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Today's audiences are more familiar with Lee than Cushing but the lead in this film was all Cushing. The story line does not stray far from the Boris Karloff rendition of 1932 (the superior of the Mummy films for story line and acting). Hammer became famous for British horror films. Hammer always brought such wonderful characterizations and color to his films.
