I watched it out of curiosity because it is a famous movie, but was very skeptical and was ready to skip through it. I must admit that the intensely colorful visual style, the singing of every bit of dialogue, and the simple yet profound story captivated me. Having heard of Denueve but knowing very little about her, the audio interview with her in the extra material is enlightening. Her flawless English reveals a strong intellect.

I was absolutely enthralled by this movie. Sure, it can be really simplistic at some points and very fantasy driven. It is entirely sung in French and I found it so charming and beautiful. Every single scene was extremely vibrant in color. A true dream for a musical film nerd like myself. I was hanging on to every note!!

This is a 1964 French musical film directed by Jacques Demy.
Its famous theme music was written by Michel Legrand.
The film dialogue is all sung as recitative, even the most casual conversation.
Jacques Demy has turned the basic drama of everyday life into a gripping opera full of bittersweet passion and unforgettablel charm, featuring a timeless performance from Catherine Deneuve.
I seldom cry while watching movies, but on this one my tears came out at the somewhat-happy-yet-melancholic-and-thought-provoking end.

One of the most touching and beautiful movies Ive ever seen and all the dialog is in song. That made it even more enchanting. Movies like this are why I love the film medium.

I have to admit that, after hearing about it for years, I'm a little bemused as to why it's supposed to be famous. I suppose it was pretty avant garde for the time. Sweet, though.
