I always wanted to take a class in Western Civilization, and this wonderful series has become my own course. All of the stories are there: the greats in history, politics, religion and the arts plus descriptions of the fashions, morals, business and of course, philosophy. I keep my IPAd handy to Google the art, cities and people to add more visual to the prose. I began this quest almost two years ago and am now on Book VIII The Age Of Louis XIV (where the powdered wig fashion started) and it has had a profound effect on my thinking and values. Beautifully written with a gentle sense of humor, reading 10,000 pages is more of an adventure than a chore. I love these books, and I love the team of Will and Ariel Durant. If it takes me four years, I will award myself my own unofficial bachelors degree in Western Civilization.
