Nory, a twelve year old girl, is watching as many homes around her fall as the rent is due and no one can pay. She herself is waiting for Da to come home with money from fishing. This is a story of life in Ireland during the great potato famine. Nory ends up helping her neighbor Anna survive until Da sends tickets to America. Nories family through the book is slowly going, one by one, to American till Nory is the only one left. Through out the book Nory learns how to take care of other people and how to be loving and caring.

I learned a lot about the potato famine in this book. This historical fiction is very accurate and detailed.
