If your feeling nostalgic, this book might be your perfect fix. Bond is a super character and somewhat more vulnerable and sensitive than the character in the movies. These books also have a great story structure which make them fun and entertaining to read. Casino Royale is in my opinion, the best of the bunch. All you need is this book and a batch of martinis and you have a great Sunday afternoon planned.

The first of the James Bond novels, written by Fleming shortly before his marriage. Some may say this was his way of dealing with a mid-life crisis. If you just know Bond from the movies, this is quite a bit different. Bond is tough and taciturn and there are few one liners or charismatic villains. "Casino Royale" is one of the better written of the series, but Fleming, even at his best, was a limited writer. For those who aren't familiar with baccarat, there are far too many gambling scenes. And there's a casual sexism that creeps in way too often. But it is a swift, enjoyable escapist thriller, which is all it's meant to be. It also contains the recipe for the Vesper cocktail.

The first and best of all of the Bond novels. It is raw, gritty, and morally ambiguous. The only one were Bond questions the morality and philosophy of his world.

Normally, I can't stand Bond movies because they're so horribly predictable. Not gonna lie, there were certain aspects of this book that were predictable, but I enjoyed this book greAtly. Instead of mindless violence and explosions, this book delves more into the actual spy elements that get lost in the movies. This particular novel also showed a more human side of Bond, the emotions behind the cold exterior that aren't fleshed out on screen. Well done, Ian Fleming.

As a side note, he is the same guy who wrote"Chitty Chitty Bang Bang". Mind=blown.

Yes, yes, it's dated, a little dry, a little comic book, but this is a good, fun espionage story. Very cool reading about the origin and development of James Bond. Fun story to read. Interesting insight into the character and history.

Quite a good book. Since it was written during the cold war there, of course, are differences compared to the relatively recent movie of the same name. As a result, it would be unfair to make a comparison to something that was updated for the modern audiences.

That being said, this is still a well-paced book that does an excellent job of setting up the character of James Bond for the rest of the book series. Looking forward to reading the next in line, Live and Let Die.

Good book, not good if you are expecting the movie in words. not too similar to the movie but good in its own way. A short Thriller

I was rather disappointed in this book; as the first of Fleming's Bond series, I was expecting much more. Both the characters and the story lack a lot of depth, both feeling very one-dimensional. The last quarter of the story is very slow, and features an unsatisfying ending. The character of Vesper Lynd is so poorly developed - Fleming wrote her with such a misogynous/sexist bias that she was just pathetic. James Bond didn't do too much either; nothing like any of the movies. Though an interesting comparison to the movie franchise, I wouldn't read this book again.

The only Bond book that I've read which is worth reading.
