Heinrich Boll quite deftly develops the main character of Group Portrait with Lady throughout her decades of turmoil, fleeting romances, and even the somewhat mundane autumn years. Boll demonstrates an acute emotional sensitivity with Leni, while filling her world with some humorous and sometimes eccentric secondary characters. In the end, Leni defies being a product of circumstance or of history.
One of the great novels of the last century. Boll has influenced me very much.
