To Be A Slave by Julius Lester is a short book using the words of slaves and former slaves to describe the life of human bondage.

The portrayal of slavery in To Be A Slave is accurate and may illuminate. Some of the extracts from Twelve years a Slave made me want to read the slave narrative by Solomon Northup, and that book turned out to be fantastic.
