I liked this book compared to some of the other books about Thurgood Marshall for a couple reasons: the author had actually spent time interviewing Marshall himself, and it covers his time as a judge and on the Supreme Court, which some books don't (his time as a lawyer is more popular because it's more exciting). However, I felt that at some points it was weirdly critical; for example, the author quotes a critic of Marshall who "said that [he] voted with Justice Brennan 94 percent of the time". The author doesn't question that, even though the statement begs the questions that how do you know that it wasn't Brennan that was voting with Marshall 94% of the time?

This is a wonderful book! Williams really captures Thurgood Marshall the man, warts and all, and he does an excellent job of explaining complicated legal issues and procedures.
