A well put-together book, told essentially from the viewpoint of the IMAX film expedition, but which includes bits of narrative from assorted climbers on Everest during the disaster of May 1996. Published in 1997, it's a coffee table format - great pictures!

Only just stumbled across this on the shelves, but I've previously read most of the books written by climbers who were on that mountain at that time - perhaps six or eight! All of the books were interesting, but my favorite was the one by Jamling Norgay, son of Tenizg Norgay who first summited Everest in 1953 with Edmund Hillary:

Touching my father's soul: a Sherpa's journey to the top of Everest (reprint ed.), HarperSanFrancisco, ISBN 978-0-06-251688-6

This book does a really good job of telling the backgrounds of people and the events leading up to the 1996 climbing season on Everest that resulted in a large number of deaths, and the rescue of some of the survivors. Book has some really awesome photos in it.

An outstanding record of the 1996 disaster on the mountain, and the successful ascent of the team that made the IMAX film.

This is a gorgeous book, with the best pictures and the best map of the South Col route, as JB says, of Everest that I've ever seen. It provides illuminating viewpoints about the 1996 deaths on Everest, which roused great controversy in the climbing community and the world at large. The scientific pages add excellent detail about high altitude mountaineering- short, to the point and answer all of my immediate questions!

Much of the spiritual approach to climbing comes through in this book, adding yet another dimension.

Great anthology of everything Everest. Includes one of the best maps/diagrams of the routes to ascend Everest.
