I had to look up the creative team behind this movie after I watched it because it was just visually incredible. I haven't seen a lot of movies that can cover the spectrum of breathtakingly gorgeous to horrifically grotesque. I'm curious to read the book now because I just want to know what else is in this author's head that didn't make it into the movie. Definitely worth the watch!I had to look up the creative team behind this movie after I watched it because it was just visually incredible. I'm usually a pretty easy critic to please and I just wasn't excited about this movie. We even waited to watch it late at night to get the full experience. Maybe I was just tired, but I could not get into the story. It was just too weird for me to really enjoy it.
With that being said, mad props to Dafoe and Pattinson for fully committing to odd characters that descend into a bizarre and delirious madness. Those are always really great roles for actors. Especially for someone like Pattinson. Actors often have a hard time breaking away from the iconic role that made them famous. They need edgy things like this to hone their craft in again.
That is honestly the best critique I have. If you're not a film buff that doesn't enjoy experimental pieces, feel free to skip this.I'm usually a pretty easy critic to please and I just wasn't excited about this movie. The disjointed storytelling technique isn't for everybody, but if that is not a deal-breaker for you, this was really well done. The characters discover for themselves how living life is not exactly what we expect. It is not a straight line, nor is it as sturdy as the structures of a house. Instead, memories and stories shower all around us like confetti (Final episode). So we are given a non-linear presentation of what was actually haunting, devouring, each character-guilt, shame, resentment, mental illness, and yes, actual ghosts.
The biggest blemish for me, is that the last episode or so got a little 'monologue-y'. I am assuming because there was more information in the book that the film couldn't quite fit in. With how beautifully and poetically these themes stalked each character, I am definitely adding the book to my reading list. And I would say this film adaptation holds it's own space. The disjointed storytelling technique isn't for everybody, but if that is not a deal-breaker for you, this was really well done. Extremely well done! We're invested in the characters right from the beginning and the rest of the ride is a full-bodied visceral, nail-biting, breath-holding experience. No spoilers, but I don't think I've ever cried so much with a zombie movie.

Beautiful myth re-weaving with sophisticated and hauntingly poetic prose. While also presenting a straight-forward story that explores the binary between fate and free will. I really enjoy it when an author explores a quassi-omniscient point of view because the voice of the character is an immortal being. How does such a being understand time differently? How would they measure life and death, or the rise and fall of civilizations?

No one goes into a story like this expecting a warm and fuzzy afterglow. And while there is some sprinkled romance and comforting familial intimacies to district the weary cast, the looming tragedy was even more devastating when it finally came. Historical foresight stalked the reader just as much as the war stalked the characters. A beautiful motif opened and closed the various narratives: what hunts you like prey? Those perspectives ranged from fate, revenge, guilt, and shame, to fear. The author closed her endnotes with a simple plea; remember these stories from the past. Give them a voice, especially if they break your heart. It is almost as if the grief in memory is as inseparable and as necessary as the salt in the sea.No one goes into a story like this expecting a warm and fuzzy afterglow. This book was a lot of fun and very informative. It starts with a brief review of what medieval mead making practices might have been and goes over a little Norse mythology with mead in it as well. The directions to make the mead yourself are low maintenance and straight forward. I got a chuckle out of the occasional words of encouragement. ‘You can do this! You’re a Viking!’ or, ‘Congratulations, you did it! You’re a Viking now!’ My first small batch was a success and I’ve got two more fermenting in the closet. Cheers! Holy cow! First of all, Benedict Cumberbatch is wonderful. Other than that I don't even know where to start to do justice to the scientist who writes so beautifully. If nothing else, it is a stunning explanation of how little we actually see, perceive, or understand about our existence and our cosmos. I cannot get enough of Alice Walker's words. I enjoyed this collection of poetry in particular because she has such a reverence for beauty and compassion with difficult modern struggles. This poem was my favorite:
To Stand Beaming and Clapping
To stand beaming and clapping for anyone
who bombs water
& denies to children
its purity to drink
endangers you,
made mostly of water
as you are.

There are no words to describe how beautiful and touching this book is that Estes hasn't already used. A collection of short stories and poetry to reclaim the divine feminine where archaic associations are challenged. Stories where 'immaculate virgin' means being so fiercely devoted to loving and protecting her children that she is a pure channel, a vessel for comfort and compassion that will not be buried for long. One of my favorite stories is about a little girl with a porcelain figurine of Mother Mary:
"..for centuries she was heavily painted as light-skinned...But it isn't an issue of color exactly; it's an issue of paling her in every way until she appears frozen, anemic, and half-erased...spoken about in more and more hushed tones...No demure little cabbage, that woman. No paltry, well-behaved carbon dot. No follower of worldly orders. Quite the contrary. Our exemplar. Blessed Mother, she who is renowned as the one able to wear the flaming, exploding fire-lakes of the Sun" (pg.16).
An absolutely stunning read for any eclectic spiritual seeker connected to the divine mother archetype. There are no words to describe how beautiful and touching this book is that Estes hasn't already used. I didn't read the book cover to cover, as most of the book is a catalog of fish species in the United States. My goal in picking up the book was to learn more about where my food comes from. Seaver's knowledge, expertise, and passion for fish is evident right away on the dedication page.
A distinct message about our over-culture's eating habits are loud and clear. "If we are focused only on sustainable fishing, then we abdicate our responsibility to behave sustainably. It is not enough to demand sustainably produced seafood if we still expect to enjoy an all-you-can-eat seafood buffet. If we expect too much from our oceans, we forfeit balance...We need to shift our baseline to ask for only what the oceans can provide and to accept the diversity it offers as our normal." pg.18.
I wish the book had more information on HOW to do these things, especially being located so far inland and removed from most seafood choices out here in colorful Colorado. But I'm glad I learned a little bit more about what and why certain choices were made for mass produced seafood in this country and I'm glad to be an education consumer as I try to further navigate my shopping choices.I didn't read the book cover to cover, as most of the book is a catalog of fish species in the United States. For the 'Guy Ritchie' style, it is a well done film. However, If you're an arthurian legend enthusiast, this is not the film for you. Right from the beginning I couldn't get passed the made-up war with mages vs. english citizens. Mordred is made out to be nothing more than a Lord of the Rings Witch King. Different bits and pieces of the legend are miss matched together and don't really hold the integrity of any of the original story lines. Nothing is even very historically accurate for the time period. What we know as vikings weren't present in England at the time, it was mostly Saxons. It all just seemed like an excuse to over exaggerate the fantasy battle scenes. I love sci-fi/fantasy action films just as much as the next person. I think if Ritchie wanted to put his spin on a medieval setting he would have been better off inventing his own story line instead of trying to take on the beloved tales of King Arthur. For the 'Guy Ritchie' style, it is a well done film.
