A light enjoyable read. I enjoyed both the similarities and differences between the book and the movie.

These stories are so uniquely Flannery O'Connor. She has such a distinct voice. These are dark, multi-layered stories filled with unlikeable characters. This book does an excellent job of being exactly what it is, which is an incredible story told through hard science. It doesn't have much literary merit but that's okay because that's not goal. Science geeks will love it but people like me will appreciate it more on the screen than on the page. Either way, it's an impressive story. This book does an excellent job of being exactly what it is, which is an incredible story told through hard science. The story is powerful and the writing is very beautiful, but be aware that the pace is slow. This book is for lovers of language and may not appeal to readers who want lots of plot or action.

This is a quiet, but lovely little memoir where we get bits about the author's life and the lives of her family and friends, woven into the daily journal of running a small bookshop in her village. It's packed full of book titles and has a slow, meandering pace which is perfect for lazy summer afternoon reading. This is a quiet, but lovely little memoir where we get bits about the author's life and the lives of her family and friends, woven into the daily journal of running a small bookshop in her village. This is maybe not for everyone but it sure worked for me, in ways that I didn't think I would like. It was fun and just a tiny bit creepy. The ending was a bit weak but I still had a great time with this book.

There is lots of buzz around this book and I understand why. It is very much a book for our time. This author managed to take a complete cast of unlikeable characters and use them to demonstrate every ugly thing that is brewing in our society at the moment. I was enjoying the effective way she addressed all this, right up until the end of the book when I thought it all fell apart, but I'm still glad I took the time to read it.There is lots of buzz around this book and I understand why. The information in this book was really interesting and well presented. However it is information dense and I would recommend reading it slowly, not only to take it in, but to prevent yourself from getting burned out by it. I was reading it on a deadline and pushed through it which left me feeling a bit overwhelmed with the material at times. It is very readable and easy to understand so don't be put off by the science. Just take your time with it.The information in this book was really interesting and well presented. This wins my praises, not because I loved the reading experience, but because it was a smart, creative, skillfully written novel with a powerful story. Totally worthy of the Booker Prize in my opinion.

F.Y.I. - This is more of a short story than a novel. It can be read in one sitting. It is a very soft spoken story with really lovely writing. This book has left me a bit bewildered and a bit awestruck. I enjoyed the reading process of Surfacing, curling up every afternoon with my tea and my thinking cap firmly in place. It is not a passive read. Right from the first page there is a mystery element present that keeps the reader's brain finely tuned to the details in order to understand what is not being said. I enjoyed the challenge but in typical Atwood style, there is a lack of closure at the end that was slightly frustrating, considering the mental energy I put into the book. There were so many aspects of the story that I thought I understood but didn't know for sure. Although I'm normally okay with open endings, this one really left me hanging with a lot to think about.
